Angoleiros do Sertão – Berlin

An Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics and music. It was developed in Brazil mainly by Angolans, at the beginning of the 16th century. It is known for its quick and complex maneuvers, predominantly using power, speed, and leverage across a wide variety of kicks, spins and other techniques. A practitioner of the art is called a capoeirista. Capoeira de Angola refers to every capoeira that keeps the traditions held before the creation of the Regional style. Existing in many parts of Brazil since colonial times, most notably in the cities of Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and Recife, it’s impossible to tell where and when Capoeira Angola began taking its present form. The name Angola starts as early as the beginning of slavery in Brazil, when Africans, taken to Luanda to be shipped to the Americas, were called in Brazil “black people from Angola”, regardless of their nationality. Pastinha preferred the ludic aspects of the game rather than the martial side, and was much respected by recognized capoeira masters. Soon many other masters would adopt the name Angola, even those who would not follow Pastinha’s style.

Capoeira Angola is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of combat, dance, acrobatics and music. Capoeira was born inside the slave communities living on the plantations as a mean of survival and only tool to defend themselves against the police when they would attempt to escape from their misery. The quilombos grew fast attracting fugitives from all around and quickly turned into multi-ethnic independent states. The biggest and most famous one was called Quilombo dos Palmares.

In them, an environment was created where people could practise their traditional cultures and where Capoeira was able to evolve in a martial art. In the 18th century we find the first documented traces of Capoeira being practiced in the big cities such as Salvador da Bahia and with the influx of more slaves and growing social life in the cities Capoeira gained popularity and started being practise by more and more people.

After the abolition of slavery in Brazil, capoeira was declared illegal at the end of the 19th century. However, by the s, authorities began to relax enforcement on its prohibition, and martial artists began to incorporate capoeira technique into their practices.

By the s, capoeira masters started traveling around the world, helping the art become internationally recognized and practiced. Since the 16th century, the Portuguese bought, sold, traded, and transported African peoples. The early history of capoeira is recorded by historians such as Dr. The purpose was also religious as it both provided a link to the afterlife which was the opposite of the living world and enabled a person to channel their ancestors into their dance.

For example, during the dance, a person might become possessed by an ancestor in the past who was talented at N’golo. During the Atlantic slave trade, this tradition transferred around the Americas; Brazil capoeira , the Caribbean Damnye and the United States knocking and kicking. In the 16th century, Portugal had claimed one of the largest territories of the colonial empires , but lacked people to colonize it, especially workers.

In the Brazilian colony, the Portuguese, like many European colonists, chose to use slavery to build their economy. In its first century, the main economic activity in the colony was the production and processing of sugar cane. Portuguese colonists created large sugarcane farms called ” engenhos “, literally “engines” of economic activity , which depended on the labor of slaves.

What is Capoeira? A question that still leaves me groping. Rather than describe what capoeira is, I choose to share on what is good capoeira. After thirty seven years of practice around the world and especially my year and stays in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, watching and playing experienced capoeiristas and mestres of diverse styles, here is my partial list of what makes good capoeira.

Each of these qualities deserves more description, illuminating this mysterious art of play fighting disguised as dance. Which is most important, essential for great capoeira? I choose malandragem. Malandragem, from a Brazilian Portuguese Dictionary, is a term for a lifestyle of idleness, fast living and petty crime. Sounds like a low life. Not an admirable way of being. Something bad. In the realm of capoeira, however, malandragem has another, deeper meaning. Capoeira was created by people who were enslaved, oppressed, lived and worked under watchful eyes of overseers armed with weapons.

Ongoing training recognizes the transformation of the student into a teacher as she or he progresses through various stages of development and returns his or her learned experience to the group. This process helps maintain the original value systems of the early capoeira masters, their culture and their life experiences, as the cycle of learning continues. At the same time, a dialogue opens by which the “teacher” is also informed and instructed by the “student” as the student marks her or his own personal achievements as a capoeirista.

A holistic approach to all aspects of the art and its traditions, in particular the songs and instruments , helps maintain a firm connection to its Brazilian heritage. The school further seeks to “promote cultural and human values” based on respect, freedom, integrity, and strength. It hopes to accomplish these goals by spreading the art of capoeira in and through universities, schools, clubs, associations, and diverse communities.

It also hopes to emphasize the cultural lessons inherent in its Brazilian roots , and by doing so, promote social integration between people of different backgrounds and classes. Appelidos are typically assigned during batizado celebrations, when new members are welcomed into the community. He grew up with nine siblings, the eldest being Edvaldo Carneiro da Silva, who became the capoeirista Camisa Roxa.

Mestre Camisa first began studying capoeira at about the age of seven, following the movements of others playing in neighborhood street rodas and instructed by his older brother Camisa Roxa, himself a student of the legendary Mestre Bimba.
